LIttle by little

Today was the only day we had available to get some work done on the house. We’re trying to finish up as many as the little details as we can so we are ready for drywall. Nick finished framing in the hallway between the entryway and the kitchen, insulated and framed in the main stack, wired for the lights in the the pantry and the hallway, framed in the curved ceiling in the half bath and wired for an outside light, for the day we have a deck in the backyard. I’ll post some pictures tomorrow. We are getting closer…off the top of my head this is what we still need to get done prior to drywall:

  • wire and install light/fan in 1/2 bath.
  • install outlets in the half bath
  • finish framing in the 1/2 bath and build the case around the manifold for access.
  • Install switch by back door for kitchen and nook lighting
  • run cable upstairs and run a phone line and cat-5 line (or whatever the most current standard is.
  • Make our final decision about installing a security system. (I’m thinking of waiting and going wireless if we end up wanting/needing one)

The list seems to be much shorter and “doable”. I can help with some of the wiring and the trips to the store, but most of this is Nick’s. I’ll be putting a lot of hours into the finish work and the big project that we’re starting later this month. (We thought we didn’t have enough to do!)

We had one person based on a recommendation come out to give us a bid for drywall. We’re still waiting for the final bid, but the initial amount seemed reasonable. We waiting for the part for doing the skimcoat and a level 5 finish so it looks more like the original plaster. The earliest the guy that is giving us an estimate could start would be next weekend, but that’s also Easter and I don’t think we’ll be ready. So the next possible date we’re looking at is the last weekend in April. We’ll see how things go. I go between being very excited and wondering if there’s something we’re forgetting and we really aren’t that close to the drywall stage. We are adusting to getting bids from people and each time we get slightly frustrated Nick exclaims that he can do it himself. I don’t think he likes working with contractors, but if we can hire out the drywall then we can focus on the trim and carpentry work. The house is finally feeling like it’s being put back together…

Regarding your plan for the cat 5/ phone cable runs, I would suggest installing a hollow conduit where you can run any type of wires later. I did that before I did the drywall in our house, as I was afraid that something newer, better, faster would come along and I would have to punch a hole in my drywall, later down the line. with the hollow conduit, its just a matter of pulling out the old wire, and putting in the new…
