Nook picture

Nick made great progress and I’m really happy with the way the nook is coming together.

Here’s what it’s like now:

The part that is open will be a drawer to give us more storage space.

The tops of the bench, table top and the top of the back of the bench will all be varnished fir. The rest will be painted.

Now if we just had a lot of extra time & Atticus took really long naps…

Sweet idea with the drawer. We aren’t going to have room for a nook in the kitchen but we are doing some benches in the front sunroom and want to incorporate storage in the seating somehow. Thanks for the inspiration.

We want to do built in benches in our nook eventually. I think it had them at one point, I can see where they layed the floor around the legs. We’re thinking of having the seats hinge, so we can store stuff under there. Mainly the kids crafts and art supplies, that are overtaking the kitchen.

That is one terrific looking nook. Plenty of room and easy to move in and out of. I also like the way you angled the seats and the backs of the seats; they look like they will be comfortable to sit in.

Yeah- the drawer idea should be great. We will use the full extension drawer slides and the drawers will be about 3/4 of the total length of the bench. We also wired an outlet there so we can use the drawers to charge our laptops, cell phones, etc.

The dimensions for the nook were inspired by and article in one of the Kitchen and Bath issues of Fine Homebuilding, written by Sarah Susanka. I’ll look up the specific issue if anyone’s interested. I love all of her ideas for built-ins and good use of space.
