Shelves and... THE SAW!
As I started unpacking the kitchen boxes that we packed up more than two years ago, I realized that we needed more shelves. So last weekend, Nick taught me to use the Sawstop and I cut four more shelves. I really like the saw. Not only does it cut like butter, but the guide for measurement is very accurate. I’d set the guide and then double check with the measuring tape and it was right-on! No more measuring a couple of times to make the marks- I didn’t even need to use a pencil!
Granted, we paid a pretty penny for this saw, but considering it has helped provide beautiful cabinets and we will make furniture with it later, we have saved much more than the cost of the saw. So we probably didn’t save a ton on the cost of the cabinets had we hired someone, but the saw will last forever. And it will protect our fingers too! You can see how the conversation goes when it comes time to buy a new tool.
Nick: “I still don’t have a table saw and we’ll need one for the kitchen cabinets.”
Trissa: “Really. Do you have one picked out?”
Nick: “Yeah, but it’s a bit pricey.”
(Then he sends me the research he’s done, shows me the magazine articles, and plays the video off of the website that demonstrates how the saw blade disengages within seconds if it comes in contact with your skin. They use a hot dog for the demonstration.)
My brother-in-law is a hand surgeon, and had just re-attached a finger from a table saw injury and he’s seen many more.
So eventually the conversation ends up with…
Trissa: “Well, I think we should get the saw. It’s less expensive than having to have a finger re-attached…” (When the saw arrived and it was brought up to the house (quite the process if you didn’t read about it before)
And so now I know how to use the saw & all the extra wood laying around can be put to good use. I figure I can make all sorts of interim shelves: one for the coat closet to keep shoes organized, more for the upstairs closets to neatly stack boxes until I go through them and decide what to get rid of, and shelves in Atticus’ closet for the stuff he’s outgrown and the things I’ve set aside for when he’s older.
All this is making me tired, so instead I think I’ll have my coffee and read about the plants I put in the garden this week… that’s another post!
