Smooth wall

We got a recommendation for someone to do the taping and mudding of the drywall for a smooth wall finish. He came out today to make a bid and Nick was able to come home during his lunch hour so it worked out perfectly. After looking at some of the drywall he asked us again if we did this ourselves. He said he hadn’t seen any other drywall done as nicely by a homeowner before. Nick was very careful because we wern’t sure if we would be able to find someone that would agree to do the mudding and taping if we hung it ourselves. He said he’d call back tonight and we’re curious to see how expensive it will be to have someone else do the work. Even if it’s expensive, it will be worth it because it will be done so quickly and we can limit the dust for a couple of days and be out of the house while they are doing the sanding. Then we can get the fir floors redone and it will be looking so much more complete. We’ll keep you posted on what we hear back.

Good choice—at least in Chicago a taper isn’t that pricey and every contractor, DIYer and even former drywallers have said to us that they always hire out the taping and mudding. It can be pretty dirty and time consuming work.

As a tip - you might want to see what he would charge to prime it, too. One contractor suggested that to us because it’s easier to see any issues on a wall that’s been primed—then you can have them fix it before you pay them. :-)

Judging from the pictures, I’ll bet he hasn’t seen many professional jobs done that well either.

Yeah, he actually said that. He said he’d hire me but I said he couldn’t afford me.

Right now Steve is dealing with having to correct our workers drywalling techniques. For example, they have a seam right over the closet doorway- there should not be seams at the edge of a door because that makes the joint weaker etc… Also, they were using lightweight joint compound to fill large gaps, which is not ok either because they will crack.

It’s kind of frustrating that he has to micromanage them. We aren’t sure if they do not know these things or just don’t care as much about these details. We just want our walls to last!

I’m not sure how I got to this page, but I just googled ‘mudding and taping, seattle’ and this is what I got. But I am glad I did. We are currently doing a house renovation in Seattle and are about to get some prices on mudding and taping. We hung the drywall already. Would you recommend the mudders and tapers that you used? If so, would it be possible to send us thier contact information? How were their prices? Quality? Responsiveness? Thanks. You can e-mail me at ccalvano75@hotmail.com.
