Vacation TODO: Day 8

The drawer’s are 95% done. The boxes are all built and sanded, and four of them are installed and operating, sans drawer fronts. I need more drawer slides and I’m going to order them from an online supplier tonight or tomorrow. This morning Trissa, Atticus, and I got up and headed over to Rockler at 8AM. We bought two slides there for 25% off each, then headed across town to the other Rockler where we bought two more. If we wanted we could probably do the same tomorrow, but I’m inclined to just order everything online since we need more than 4 more slides.

I’m glad that I found the energy last night to get a start on the drawer boxes. That really helped me to get them all built today. Trissa is already loading stuff into them, even though this isn’t the permanent installation. Tomorrow is the last day of vacation and if I have time I’ll cut the drawer fronts and install them, which will effectively allow me to cross item #2 completely off the list. As with the doors, the drawers need to be varnished before final installation.

We’re close to crossing #7 off the list. One door is hung, the other two are on the saw horses. They each need one more coat on the current side, then three or four more on the under side. This could happen tomorrow easily.

#16 will get done too. Earlier in the week I ordered the in-ceiling speakers for the living-dining room and they arrived today. All I have to do is measure, measure again, then cut 2 holes in the ceiling. If I get the right spots I’ll find two speaker wires waiting where I left them before the drywall went up.

If I’m really lucky and motivated I bet I can get #8 and #9 done too. I have all of the paint, and it should only take an hour or two to get it up. The hard part will be the prep, as is usual with painting projects.

Wow - tomorrow is the last day of vacation. It’s been a long 8 days. Here’s where I am with the list:

  1. Kitchen cabinet doors. 11 total. 4 important ones for the base cabinets.
  2. Kitchen cabinet drawers. 7 total.
  3. Upper cabinet crown.
  4. Kitchen nook seating and table.
  5. Kitchen island trim and panels.
  6. Kitchen under-cabinet lighting.
  7. 3 interior doors: sand, varnish, install with hardware. (Important baby-proofing item…)
  8. Paint kitchen ceiling and walls (already primed).
  9. Paint foyer ceiling and walls.
  10. Electrical panel - re-order the breakers and document them all.
  11. Strip and sand baseboard for the living / dining room. Determine if it can be re-varnished.
  12. Cable TV to the kitchen. Forgot this when we had the walls open (DOH!)
  13. Window sill for kitchen nook. Started this but is incomplete.
  14. Exterior lights by the back doors.
  15. Dining room chandelier (choose, purchase, install).
  16. Dining room speakers (purchase, install - I prewired for them before we drywalled…)
  17. Cat door platform (ask Trissa…)
  18. Clean the upstairs hall closet - it’s a MESS!

Not bad. It sounds like one of my “vacations”. I saw an add in the paper yesterday for a day spa. A woman was getting something dripped on her forehead. All I could think was, there is no way I could sit still for that long. I remember reading how Drew Berrymore jumped off a cruise ship and swam to shore she was so bored on the ship. Not that I want every one of my vacations to be filled with house projects, but ever since then, one of my nightmare scenarios has been to be stuck on a cruise ship for a 2 week vacation. I couldn’t do it.

We went on a cruise once- we slept a lot! It wouldn’t be one of our top choices, but if I was worn out, I’d do it again, just because I slept so well. I keep wondering what we’ll do when we’re done with the first floor, but we have so many projects to go. By the time we’re done with them all, the doors will need new varnish or something. (It will at least be quite awhile before your house needs a new coat of paint!)
