What lies beneath?
There is a corner of the kitchen linoleum that keeps peeling back a bit more and more. So far it’s only exposed some sub flooring. The kitchen floor is higher than the rest of the flooring, so I’m wondering what is under the linoleum. Is it just a sub floor, or might we find some old growth fir flooring that has been covered up for years?
Maybe I’ll do a little investigation this weekend and see what lies beneath! Pictures to follow the exploration…

Ours has fir underneath, there’s 2 layers of lino and a layer of vinyl on top. No idea what condition it’s in though. The bathroom used to have fir too, it’s been replaced with 3/4” ply subfloor.

DON’T DO IT!
When I did that we ended up gutting the kitchen and refinishing the whole room!
Last heard sometime in 2001…
“We’ll just do some cosmetic touching up and this place will look fine.”
Four years later…
“Do you think we’ll ever move into this place?”

Gary - we’ve been there too, with our upstairs bath. What was supposed to be a “prep and paint” weekend snowballed to the point where the entire room was gutted and unusable. This was 3 years ago. I’ve since reinstalled the stool, but not much else has changed.
This all happened when my dad was out ‘helping’ from Wisconsin. I blame him. ;)

I suspect we have wood flooring under our layers of lino too. We saw it when we replaced the dishwasher. However, the wood under the dishwasher looked as if it had NEVER been finished. Even if it had, cleaning up after linoleum glue is no fun. I know because I’m still scraping my stairs.

Ok- Reality says not to look, but since I know we’ll be gutting the entire first floor in a couple of months, I may still have to have a sneak preview of what we’ll find!

Our kitchen floor is much higher than the floor in the dining room.
If the laundry room was any indicator there are three layers of vinyl and linoleum tile under there.
