Why don't we just build a window? Part One.

Phil arrived today and after we had lunch, he and Nick got down to the planning:

The goal for this week is to build a double hung window to replace our original 1907 windows.

This is the window they will be building a replacement for this week:

They measured and re-measured, referenced an article in Fine Homebuilding (Jan. 2007), and drew out their plans. Of course no project is complete without a trip to the hardware store, so they headed out to get the router bit that they needed. I think they must have needed something else as they’ve been gone for quite awhile.

To prep for this week Nick has been quite busy:

  • He planed, jointed, and glued re-claimed fir from our house to use for making the window.

  • He ordered the insulated glass and the hidden double-hung mechanism. (I know there is probably a technical name for it, but he’ll have to explain that, or I can make changes to the post once I get the info from him.

  • The shop has been re-arranged, cleaned, and he built cabinets and installed some under-cabinet lights.

What did I do to prep for this project, you ask?

  • cleaned the house

  • bought groceries and am making meals to keep them fed

  • and most importantly, I said, “Okay Nick, I think it’s a great idea for you to build our own windows!”

Tomorrow I’ll be at work and Atticus will be playing at daycare. Dinner is already made so I will just pop it in the oven and I can hear all about the progress over lemon tarragon chicken.

I’m really excited about the windows. I’m sad that I’ll be saying goodbye to the old, wavy glass, but we’ll re-use it somewhere.

I’ll make a new post when I understand more of the technical information and find out what router bit they had to buy. For now, it’s time to get dinner ready and keep my workers happy and healthy.

    Dear Trissa,

I love your blog, and I hope to soon have a houseblog of my own. I’m in the early stages of house renovation and aquiring tools. I was wondering if you could share what kind of router table you and Nick have? I’d like one that can handle big projects like windows, doors, moulding, etc, but am a little frustrated trying to figure out what to get. Thanks so much! Can’t wait to see that window.

    Katherine

I hope the window are going well, we’re hoping to go the marvin route, but we may get sticker shock as well. We have a aluminum inserts in all our windows, so we don’t have the original sashes as reference. I guess getting them to seal nicely is the challenge with sash windows.

Hi Katherine. Our router table is from Rockler. It’s the Rockler brand for the table itself, with a Jess Em lift. The router is a 3hp Porter Cable model.
