Built ins

After reading the featrued story on House Blogs by Jeanne “Built-In… Form and Function”, I began thinking about what built-ins we have done and which are my favorite. (Or favorite so far, as we’ve got a lot of house left that we haven’t re-furbished.)

So far my favorites are the built-in drawers under the nook seats and the garbage recycling center in the island. I don’t have a picture of the drawers open on this computer, just with them closed. One of the reasons that I love these drawers, beside the storage, is that we ran wire to the drawers and installed a power strip in the back of each drawer. One of the drawers has become our technology drawer and we plug in our phones, cameras, etc. to charge and we can close the drawer. Soon the drawers will have fronts like the cabinets and the top will have a lip routered into it so we can pull the drawer open. It won’t look like a drawer, so unless you know it’s there, you wouldn’t try to open it.

I love the recycling center because it keeps the garbage and recycling containers out of sight. It fits plain old garbage containers that you can buy at any store so if they ever crack we can easily replace them.

So those are my two favorite built-ins that we’ve done so far.

If I could have any built-in, I think it would be a very organized closet in the bedroom. Maybe someday…

What is your favorite built in, or what would it be?

Those are both cool examples. For our tech, we’ve looked alot at the eNook and we’re considering it for our own kitchen remodel. Maybe we could modify a drawer like you did though.

I also want to have a recycling chute down to the basement…kinda a variation on your idea but with the storage down in the basement.

    Nice work!

I love your nook, I can’t wait to redo ours. We’re thinking the drawers would be for all the kids art supplies. A place for recycling will definitely be a priority when we do our kitchen, it’s a constant problem at the moment. Our kitchen is only 10x10’, so it’s going to be a challenge.

It WILL be our pantry when we finish it! Right now, I would say my closet is my favorite because I am able to fit so much in there now.

In the future, when we convert the basement, we are thinking of making a nook or storage cubbard under the stairs.
