Changing my mind, I think.
I’m starting to change my mind about the plumbing stack. It still needs to come out and be replaced, but perhaps not this weekend. I really want to research this “new cast iron” possibility a bit more, and I also want to get some framing done!
The primary impetus for replacing the stack sooner than later is that ideally the first floor half-bath needs to have its drain roughed in before I repair the badly damaged sub floor that is atop of where the pipe will go. What I’m now thinking is that I can run the pipe but not actually connect it to the stack until later. This is sounding better and better.
One other comment I’ve been meaning to make: HouseBlogs sure has grown! Our little community is what, 63 strong at the moment? I feel as if I can hardly keep up. Trissa and I have a core set of blogs that we read, and I feel as if I’m probably missing out by not reading all of the new ones I just don’t recognize immediately. Good work, Aaron and Jeannie, you guys have done an outstanding job!

The biggest hassle with iron is the oakum and lead seals. Our local code allows the use of shredded lead as well as poured molten lead which maks it a little easier. I replaced our stack with plastic and put isulation around the pipe and styrene in the wall built up around it. That worked just fine. Here is a suggestion for you. Keep the metal main stack but run pvc vents and drains to it. You could also do pvc above the highest toilet since this becomes vent anyway. Once you smack the iron pipe with a hammer you may end up breaking seals all over the place. Oh and do what our plumber failed to do which cost me a $90 visit from roto rooter. Put a rag in the cleanout and up into the stack to catch the scale that will fall off the inside and clog the drain. It is because of the crap job the plumber did and the fact his work failed the inspection that I will no longer use a contractor for work that I can do!

There are always RSS readers out there. They save alot of time going through various blogs.
