I hate caulk

This morning’s project is to reglaze the kitchen windows. Trissa has to work this weekend, so it’s all up to me.

Last weekend, after I found a single ounce of my missing motivation, I stripped, sanded, and primed the sashes for our nook window. This window is reclaimed from the old kitchen and is being installed in a new location. It has two sashes that open outward on hinges, and each sash has 6 panes in a cottage style arrangement. I also bought cut the glass for each pane, as well as the glazing supplies I’d need to install it all.. I actually came up short on glass and need to run out soon and get some more.

The glazing compound that I bought came in a caulking tube, and it sucks. It’s messy, but mostly it’s just very hard to get a nice looking job. Dont buy this stuff, even if your HD is like mine and doesn’t carry anything else. I think when I head out to get more glass I’m going to buy some more traditional glazing putty and see how that works. It took me nearly 2 hours to do one window, and I’m not all that impressed with the job I did. If the other putty works better I’ll consider redoing the sash I just completed.

I hope you’ve found some better caulk and the rest of the project is going smoothly! I’m still at work, but would much rather be there helping you!

The only thing the tube glazing is good for is the bedding of the pane of glass. The DAP 33 glazing in the can is the thing to use for the top edge of the glazing. Your putty knife must be flexible and it helps to have the knife cleaned with paint thinner. Also give the glazing plenty of time to skin over.
