Our new kitchen, part 2

I’m watching Nick take the doors and hardware off the kitchen cabinets. This will stop us from opening the cupboards to find something, only to remember that everything is in the dining room on the tall metal cart. We’ve cooked two basic meals (spaghetti and tacos) with our minimal pots, pan and dishes. So far, so good!

Beginning this major renovation is exciting, but it’s also a strange feeling. Is it uneasiness? Fear that it will never end? Uncertainty that we will have the knowledge and money to get it done? Whatever it is, it is fun to begin the journey. I think I will be needing the support of the online community that has paved the way ahead of us!

The plan now is to keep the sink and dishwasher in place until the last moment. We’ll use the table from the nook and our little “island on wheels” for our countertops and table. The front porch will become our dining room for the majority of the summer. I figure with a barbecue we can still have some decent home made meals and won’t be eating pizza so often that we will never eat it again after the project is complete!

There’s some pretty cool linoleum lining some of the cabinets. I wonder if we’ll find a layer of this under the floral stuff that’s covering the floor now!

We are just finishing our kitchen-did most everything ourselves except water lines and electric. Started Easter weekend 2004. We kept our stove in the kitchen for the duration and cooked-we just covered it with drop cloths to protect it(it isn’t a fancy Viking stove or anything like that-just basic but new). We washed dishes in the basement and bought a new Weber grill for the summer. The worst part for me was washing the dishes and having what I called the largest kitchen work triangle in existence. Fridge in dining room. Stove in kitchen. Sink in bathroom. Small appliances in den.

Maybe yours won’t take so long or maybe it will- either way I am sure it will be great. I will post photos of ours soon- we are holding off till tiling is done. Good luck!

I am looking forward to buying some new cookbooks and experimenting…

You have my sympathy on your kitchen renovation. We are a ways off from doing ours but I will be reading your blog daily and keeping an eye out for “pitfalls to avoid”. Any advice you post will be well appreciated. :)

OK, you already cook more than us. We are sad.
