Ramblings...

In order to lay the bamboo flooring, the cabinet bases need to be installed first so we know exactly where/what the floor butts up to. That also means that we need to run the electrical along the wall with the stove, insulate, and hang drywall before we put that base cabinet in place. Despite thinking a lot about this project and drawing out what we wanted, we could have been better prepared. We spent this morning going over our drawings and getting the exact measurements, and then the de-construction of the temporary counters and the framing in of the new bases has begun..

The first section of cabinets is the wall where the stove is and the peninsula. It’s pretty exciting to see it take shape. Since I can’t be much help with the cabinet bases, my next job is to build a mock island out of cardboard to see if we like the location and size.

I think there have been more details and decisions to be made with the kitchen planning, than we’ve had with other parts of the remodel. How much space between drawers do we want? And what types of hinges? Wwhere do we want drawers versus cabinets and how many? How deep should the silverware and spice drawers be, and do we want wire shelves for where the pots and pans go? That’s just a few of the things we made final decisions on this morning. I guess those things are decided when you pick out cabinets from a store or through an interior designer or architect.

We’re using 3/4 “finished plywood for the cabinet bases (maple). I’m still amazed that Nick and his dad are making the cabinets. The face fronts will be made from fir, most that has been recovered from other parts of the house, and the rest we’ll get from one of the salvage yards. This project seems above me and I get how most of it goes together, but feel like I could never take over the project if I had to do so. So I’ve taken on the role of assistant, moral support and chef. I’ll keep them well fed and hopefully they will be more than happy to keep building.

I’ll post pictures & some of the drawings with the next post.

Off to build me a cardboard island!

I’ve been in this position myself. Some woodworking projects are beyond what I can tackle without constant supervision or help.
